Williams
& Works staff provided surveying and engineering services
for the re-platting of McElroy's addition of a 7-acre
plat on the corner of Bank and Collins Streets in the
City of Kalamazoo.
Efforts
included coordinating with the City of Kalamazoo to develop
several conceptual layouts for the proposed plat and creating
the proposed typical section to be used for the new public
street. The new road has an 80-foot right-of-way with
a 20-foot-wide boulevard section where it connects to
Bank Street. The road then transitions to a 66-foot right-of-way.
Property
development required relocation of the 8-inch public sanitary
sewer, a new 8-inch watermain, and storm drain piping
for runoff. The storm drain piping was oversized to provide
in-line detention in an effort to relieve burden on the
existing storm drain system, which is now undersized due
to the development over the years. Storm water from the
development is treated using an Aqua-Swirl concentrator
to remove sediment and debris from the system before discharge
into nearby Portage Creek, a tributary of the Kalamazoo
River.
Construction
permits obtained for the project include those required
by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for
sanitary sewer and watermain. Additionally, a floodplain
fill permit was required to construct the storm drain
within the limits of the 100-year floodplain. The permit
also allowed the finished grade elevation of two proposed
lots to be raised to provide sufficient buildable area
above the 100-year flood elevation.
Williams
& Works is providing construction administration and
inspection services throughout the course of the construction
schedule to verify the installation of the sanitary sewer,
storm drain, and all concrete work within the right-of-way.
The
project was funded, in part, with Community Development
Block Grant funds.
